WORLD BICYCLE DAY 2020
June 3

With more then a billion bicycles worldwide cycling is the most common way to move, travel and exercise. On June 3 we celebrate the World Bicycle Day 2020, giving us the opportunity to bring the cycling community together on a global scale. During the next few days I will be sharing  4 video messages about what we try to achieve on that special day – and how you can get involved.

Specially during the Corona Pandemic it is important to stick together and show compassion. Starting on June 3, the World Bicycle Day we want to put the focus on cyling and show how powerful cyclists can be, when united. Not only will we be attempting to achieve something great together, but at the same time we can help a very important cause.

For the past few years I have been raising awareness to support the much needed research for ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).
There is still no cure for this deadly disease. And like COVID 19, this disease knows no borders.
Every person diagnosed is in the high risk group during this pandemic.
During our mission on June 3 we want to make a big impact in worldwide awareness of  ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).
Get on your bikes,  share snapshots on social media and even show the world how many kilometres you have done.

My team Israel Start-Up Nation, friends, partners, colleagues and of course my family are all supporting this important event. One of our great partners is Strava, the No1 tracking app for cyclists, where you can also find and follow me , because I log all my training and races there. Between June 3 and June 7 I am challenging all of you to join my ‘Ride around the World Challenge’ on Strava and add all of your rides in that timeframe- no matter if 1km or 100km long. So get your bike ready, start your Strava app and join the “Ride around the world“ STRAVA challenge.
The other big partner for this important project is Katusha Cycling, the official clothing supplier for my team Israel Start-Up Nation. Together we created a brand new cycling outfit – the “Greipel Fight-ALS race line” line. We’re really excited to present you this kit and the story behind it. All about it in the next video. Together with our official team supplier KATUSHA we created a new cycling outfit – the Greipel Fight ALS race line.

ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) is short for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. ALS affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Eventually, patients cannot control their muscles. They become paralyzed. Most patients will die within five years after after diagnosis. My mother was also diagnosed with this incurable disease. Therefore, it is a very personal concern for me to advance the research of ALS. Only together, we can accelerate ALS research. Please support us with your donation.

At the moment we support the financing of a research study at the DZNE e.V. (German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases). The study is on „Cognition in ALS correlated with metabolic activity as measured by FDG-PET: a longitudinal study“.The study is supervised by Prof. Dr. Prudlo and his team. Over a period of three years the study will examine ALS patients for their higher brain functions (cognition) and their behavior.

The donations that are generated through this campaign go entirely to the ALS research. In addition to his work for DZNE e.V., Prof. Dr. Prudlo works as a senior physician at the Neurological Clinic of the University of Rostock and treats my mother and other ALS patients there. If you wan to know more about the work of Prof. Dr. Prudlo and his colleagues, please check out the website of DZNE e.V..
